PRESS RELEASE

TERRORISM: IT’S TIME TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM, NOT ONLY THE SYMPTOM!

Posted on December 9, 2015 by  in Press Releases // 0 Comments

Surrey, BC – The recent wave of terrorist acts across the globe perpetrated by Islamic extremists and the way how the world is responding to it has instilled an increased sense of tension, fear, and uncertainty both locally and globally. The world cannot and will not end terrorism by simply attempting to eliminate the concerned terrorist groups: terrorism is only a symptom of a problem.

We can end the concerned terrorist acts only by addressing the root cause of the underlying problem. The recent terrorist attacks, in fact, have provided us with a great opportunity to begin a meaningful conciliatory process for this. It can take the form of a series of discussions led by the United Nations or any other party mutually acceptable to the conflicting groups.

It is, no doubt, important to first understand what may have led to the underlying problem in the past. However, the primary focus in such a conciliatory process should be on the present and future, and not the past. After all, it is the spiral of acts of vendetta and vengeance that has brought the world to what it is today. Under any event, this cannot go on for ever. The ever-strengthening of the intensity and destructive capacity of war weapons will inevitably either annihilate humanity or, in the best possible scenario, return humanity to the Stone Age.

We humans will always remain diverse and complex with all our racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, cultural, ideological, and other differences. Despite such diversity, we only have one planet to live on. Thus, it is a necessity, and not a choice, to share its resources in an equitable manner, caring for each other’s needs. This is possible only if we learn to treat the wellbeing and happiness of all humans just as one’s own, irrespective of any of the said differences.

Under any event, state terror is NOT the answer to ongoing suicide attacks. Instead, state terror only creates more terrorists. We need to change the way we deal with terrorism from mere acts of vengeance and despair to those of mutual understanding, respect, and reconciliation – certainly before it becomes too late. This, in turn, will change the present world of tension, fear, and uncertainty to one of relief, resilience and durable peace. Let’s all begin the New Year with these new thoughts.

  • May everyone care for the needs of others and share what is available in a more equitable manner!
  • May no one take vengeance for past wrongs of others!
  • May everyone always act responsibly in a trustworthy and reliable manner!
  • May everyone appreciate the wellbeing and happiness of all humans, just as one’s own – irrespective of any identifiable difference!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 1, 2015

ELIMINATE THE ENMITY, NOT THE ENEMY!

Recipe for Lasting Peace on Earth

Surrey, BC, January 1, 2015 The world is plagued with violent conflicts, not one or two, but many. The Israel – Palestine conflict, civil wars in Syria, Iraqi insurgency, South Sudan ethnic conflict, Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan, civil war in Somalia, Islamist insurgency in Nigeria, war in North-West Pakistan, Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan are some of the highlights. Together, they have claimed millions of human lives over the years.

No doubt all the parties to all these conflicts are doing their best to bring them to a closure, sooner than later. For this, they continue to depend on a common strategy of eliminating the enemy, instead of the enmity between the rival parties. Unfortunately, this is NOT a strategy that can bring about lasting peace among fighting groups in any situation. Instead, it is a strategy that only further escalates the tension between the rival parties, and in the world. In fact, it is this strategy that finally set the stage for past world wars: WWI and WWII. And, it is now becoming more and more evident that history is going to repeat itself. Some may think that global catastrophes like world wars will inevitably come and go and are even a necessity as a means of correction to the ever growing human population and other forms of life on the planet.

According to historians, the human death tolls in WWI and WWII were as high as 15 million and 60 million, respectively. However, these figures would simply be viewed as scanty when compared to what could happen in the next world war, WWIII. It is poised to be fought with nuclear and other non-conventional weapons. That may be why Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955) once said, “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV would be fought with sticks and stones.”

It is not a secret that the amount of nuclear weapons alone already stockpiled on the surface of Earth is more than enough to turn the entire humanity to ashes in seconds. The expert opinion is that such weapons will certainly be used in any future world war. For example, the Russell – Einstein Manifesto of 1955 stated, “In view of the fact that in any future world war nuclear weapons will certainly be employed, and that such weapons threaten the continued existence of mankind.” Only we ourselves are to be blamed if the impending calamity is not prevented by taking whatever remedial action necessary, not after the fact, but NOW.

This is perhaps the biggest ever challenge to modern civilization. The remedial action needed to meet the challenge is basically two fold. First, there is a need to stop all ongoing activities that contribute to rising global tension. Second, the parties to ongoing violent conflicts need to go away from the failed strategy of eliminating the enemy and look for new ways to resolve them.

The activities that contribute to the rising global tension are numerous and varied. Unilateral global policing by powerful nations, War on Terror in all its manifestations, and the buildup of nuclear and other forms of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) appear to be the main concerns. The powers that be need to heed to this call and stop immediately their direct and indirect involvement in all these areas. On the issue of WMDs, the mere reduction of existing arsenals is not good enough. Instead, all the nations that possess WMDs need to evolve a formula, preferably under the auspices of the UN, to get rid of all such weapons.

Any new approach to conflict resolution should primarily aim at the elimination of the enmity, instead of the enemy. A quick look at the past and present major conflicts in the world shows the nature and extent of enmity among the concerned conflicting parties. Practically in every conflict, one group of people have coalesced on the basis of their racial, ethnic, religious, cultural, or ideological identity to fight a similarly coalesced group conceived to be an enemy. Humans will, indeed, continue to remain diverse with such identifiable differences. However, it is a blatant fact that all humans, irrespective of such identifiable differences, have the same basic needs and aspirations in life. We also share knowingly or unknowingly a common value system, which, in fact, has been the basis of what we all look up to as the universal human rights.

All this simply means that our ability to end enmity among ourselves in whatever shape or form depends on our preparedness to accept and celebrate - instead of despising - the diversity among us, respect our common values and to treat the wellbeing and happiness of all just as one’s own. Is this something we can ever do? Yes, we can. For this, we only need to unleash our inherent forces of love, kindness and compassion towards our fellow beings. Every human is capable of doing this. If all this sounds new to anyone, NOW is the best time to begin the process. After all, “we must be the change we wish to see in the world,” as also once asserted by Mahatma Ghandi.

The above equally applies to powerful nations resorting to war tactics as a means to resolve conflicts outside their own jurisdictions. The western military intervention in the ongoing violent conflicts in the Middle East is a case in point. All those who play a role in such outside intervention only make things worse by becoming part of the problem, and not the solution. In this regard, the decision of Canada to join the US war against ISIS in the Middle East appears far-fetched and unproductive. Such decisions of Canada in the recent past have begun to tarnish its image as an exemplary peacekeeper and a humanitarian aid provider across the world. It is time for Canada to reverse this trend and play a global leadership role in building a world of lasting peace, not wars, for our future generations. Thank you. Viva Canada! Viva the world!

·

May everyone care for the needs of others and share what is available in a more equitable manner.

May no one take vengeance for past wrongs of others.

May everyone always act responsibly in a trustworthy and reliable manner.

May everyone appreciate the wellbeing and happiness of all humans, just as one’s own - irrespective of any identifiable differences.

 PRESS RELEASE

January 6, 2014

BIRTH OF A NEW PEACE ORGANIZATION

 Global Peace Alliance, Surrey Society

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SURREY, British Columbia, Canada

“Strategies of arms regulation and balance of power will not help prevent the next world war and maintain lasting peace,” says author, poet, dramatist, and peace activist Dr. R. B. Herath. “It’s time for a new approach to global peace based on the power of reason - instead of the reason of power.”

Some peace-loving British Columbians have formed a new organization called the Global Peace Alliance, Surrey in search of such a new approach to global peace. Although it is based in British Columbia (BC), Canada, its interests and undertakings are of vital importance to the entire global community. This new Alliance is now fully incorporated under the BC Society Act.

The stated vision of the Alliance is a new world of lasting peace with no more wars. It is a world trusting on the power of reason, justice, democracy, economic equity and environmental integrity. It is also a world where humans celebrate their diversity, respect their common values, and resolve their inevitable conflicts by non-violent means. The declared mission of the Alliance is to empower people and their educational, cultural and other grassroots networks everywhere to build and sustain a culture of peace for generations to come.

“It is so unfortunate that the UN Charter provisions for arms regulation (Article 26) and possible disarmament (Article 47) have simply not worked” says Dr. Herath. If the status quo remains, nuclear and other forms of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) will continue to grow in both quantity and intensity. Yet, what has been already stockpiled on the surface of Earth is more than enough to turn the entire human species to ashes in seconds. And, there are also enough conflicts in the world that have the dire potential to trigger the next world war – just as how some isolated conflicts started WWI and WWII. A wrong step by a wrong party at a wrong time is all what is now required. This would then create a perfect opportunity to put to use all the WMD available. Power balancing will be good only until then. Neither the United Nations in its present condition could rescue the world from such a calamity.

This situation presents the biggest challenge to modern civilization. The onus is on us, the present occupants of the planet to overcome this challenge clearly before it becomes too late. The good news is that although it is a challenge that appears insurmountable, we do have the ability to overcome it. All what it takes is our willingness to embrace some basic human virtues that can combat and eradicate the causes and conditions that produce and deepen human conflicts. These virtues are simple as caring & sharing, forgiving & forgetting, acting responsibly in a trustworthy manner, and treating the wellbeing and happiness of all humans just as one’s own. Children, youth and adults all are capable of embracing these simple virtues.

The Global Peace Alliance, Surrey will deliver projects and programs to educate people of all ages about the dynamics of conflict and to spearhead a novel approach to global peace based on the above. This new approach will empower and inspire people to be the change they need with the inculcation of the said human virtues. At the same time, the Alliance will promote and support measures taken by other organizations towards the same end.

The Alliance is very pleased to announce its formation and the new approach to global peace it promotes at this time and calls upon everyone everywhere to start the New Year with a new vision for the future of the world. Thank you.

  • May everyone care for the needs of others and share what is available in an equitable manner.
  • May everyone forgive and forget any harm done by others.
  • May everyone always act responsibly in a trustworthy and reliable manner.
  • May everyone appreciate the wellbeing and happiness of all humans, just as one’s own - irrespective of race, ethnicity, tribe, religion, language, culture, and ideology.

The inaugural meeting of the Global Peace Alliance in Surrey took place in the form of a World-Café style discussion at the City Central Library in Surrey, BC, CANADA on Saturday, September 28, 2013. The participants who took part in the discussion include many local community leaders and other peace-building and peace-loving people in the community.
This World-Café style discussion centred around three main questions:1.     As a peace volunteer, what are your biggest concerns about the state of state of the   world today?   2.     What kind of a peaceful world you would aspire for future generations?   3.     What is needed to be done to build such a peaceful world?

The steering committee of the new global peace initiative undertook to draft the founding documents of the planned Global Peace Alliance (Vision & Mission statements, Purpose, Principles, etc.) based on the answers to these questions articulated by those who participated in the discussion and to call for another general meeting to review and ratify the draft documents.

Dear Friends:

Thank you for your interest in books written by R. B. Herath and his continued efforts in peacemaking. His latest book, A New Beginning for Humankind: A Recipe for Lasting Peace on Earth lays out a creative, revolutionary approach to lasting peace on the planet. It aims at empowering the ordinary people around the globe to play a dominant, central role in building world peace in an extraordinary way. The steadfast process R. B. Herath proposes for implementing the approach is designed to end human traits and habits that promote war and to develop those that promote peace. Thus, the entire process for lasting peace begins with you! Every able human, young or old, can play an important role in it – in an individual capacity or as a member of a group: family, classmates, schoolmates, workmates, society, nation, or the global community. This process also calls for the blessings and active support of all peace-lovers and their organizations, religious leaders, educators, politicians of all shades and beliefs, governments at all levels, and the United Nations Organization. In essence, it is a mind development process that will have the ripple effect once we start it. As Herath explains in his book, it is based on proven processes in other areas of human endeavour, such as the modern environmental movement.

Herath is also busy in forming a new global peace movement to give life to this historic, revolutionary peace process. He first convened the first meeting of local community leaders interested in such a movement. It was held at the Baobab Inclusive Empowerment Society office in Surrey, BC, on Wednesday, May 15, 2013. At the end of this meeting, the attendees agreed to hold the first public workshop of the intended peace club at the Surrey Central Public Library on Saturday, September 28th, 2013. The two photos below show some of the participants of this historic May 15th meeting.
